Korea

Time for a real, honest to goodness update. Yes.... Hmmm.... I have no idea where to begin, so we'll start with the plane ride from the States to Korea.

Hot dang, it was the longest plane ride of my life. The longest stretch was 15 hours, but with two layovers and two shorter flights, it took me a grand total of 24 hours to get to Busan. I would say "Never again!" but that would mean acquiring permanent citizenship in South Korea, and even though I really like it here, I don't know if I like it that much.

My first two days in Busan were exceptionally boring. I was seriously jetlagged, so I spent most of my time sleeping. Oh, and get this: I slept through the new year. Not only did I miss New Year's Eve altogether, but apparently my party-crazy roommates had a HUGE, loud party at our house and I didn't hear a thing. When I woke up the next morning, there were broken beer bottles all over the floor, champaign dripping from the ceiling, and cigarette butts anywhere and everywhere. Now, my question of the day is, how the crap did I sleep through a party like that? I never cease to amaze myself.

My friends Mel and Dan returned from Thailand on Sunday night, so that forced me out of my bed and room. They showed me around town and took me to Korea's version of Walmart (E-Mart) to get the things I need in order to survive while I'm here (like food).

January 2nd marked my 25th year of life on planet earth, and I decided to celebrate it at a culturally well-rounded restaurant: TGI Fridays (I had the fajitas).

I've already discussed school a little bit, so I won't waste your time with anymore ridiculous details about my children... but they are really, really funny. I have one kid who decided yesterday that he wants to be named Harry Potter, so he insists that everyone call him Harry Potter every time anyone addresses him. It really is a fitting name for him because he has dark hair (as most Koreans do), glasses, and a sloppy grin. It makes it easy for me to remember his name, but it's really hard to say it with a straight face when I'm scolding him. "Harry Potter, sit down." or "Harry Potter, do not talk while Teacher is talking." Oh Harry....

Culturally, I think I'm adjusting pretty well. I'm picking up the necessary Korean words to get around town in a cab and order from a menu. I'm starting a Korean language class on Saturday, so maybe I'll be fluent by the time I go back home! (Highly unlikely, but one can wish.) I really like it here and I'm definitely looking forward to summer. The beaches are amazing, so you can count on me being tan all the summer long!

Last but not least, I found an amazing, I repeat AMAZING, coffee shop about two blocks away from my apartment last night. It's called Adagio or something like that. They import coffee beans from all over the world and roast them right there in the coffee shop. Oh my gosh, I can't even tell you how amazing it is.

With all of that said, will you please come to Korea and visit me? I promise you will have a good time.

I can't believe that it really takes 24 hours to get there and that you slept through the whole party at your apartment. Nice work :) I'm glad that things seem to be going pretty smoothly though. Good luck with the kiddies.
