If for no other reason than to understand the office gossip at my school. Not just any gossip, mind you. The Korean teachers unashamedly talk about me in their own language... right in front of me. I hear, "Korean, Korean, Korean, LIZ, Korean, Korean, Korean, LIZ" all the time. They look at me while they're talking, too, so I know they're talking about me. And they laugh. A lot. That's the part that drives me bonkers. I used to think talking about people behind their backs was rude. But this is a lot worse.
Sometimes I wish I knew Korean. I would love to know Korean, but not let anyone else know that I know it (does that confuse you?). I would be like a fly on the wall during every Korean conversation held in my presence. The secrets I would learn!
Sometimes I try to look like I understand what the teachers are saying about me. I'll do my best to give them a little smirk and a look that says, "You fools. I totally know what you're saying" (even though I don't have the first clue). It never works, though. I think they know my entire Korean vocabulary consists of about ten words.
As shallow as my motives may be, I'm starting Korean lessons in March.
